Casablanca

220 Lincoln Blvd, Venice, CA 90291 · 310-392-5751

User Rating: 9.6 / 10

Description: VENICE. If you're a fan of the movie "Casablanca" (which is set in Morocco), you'll likely be a fan of this restaurant, too. The décor and ambiance pay homage to what some call one of the greatest movies of all time, but the cuisine is straight Mexican. While that seems a strange combination, the end result works quite well. Handmade tortillas are prepared fresh daily, in the center of the dining room no less, and the calamari is reputedly the best in town. Live music is featured most nights, and the tequila list is vast.

La Serenata Gourmet

10924 W Pico Blvd, West Los Angeles, CA 90025 · 310-441-9667

User Rating: 7.75 / 10

Description: WESTWOOD. This place is an off-shoot of its famous East LA cousin, and the food is just as good. Fresh fish either grilled or in a burrito, a gordita stuffed with shrimp, and weekend breakfast specials keep the crowds coming back. They do not accept reservations for groups of less than eight, so be prepared to wait. No worries, though: this is one of the top Mexican restaurants in LA, so the time is well spent.

User Rating: 9.5 / 10

Be sure to ask for it "to go," even if you are eating in - with a "to go" you get extra chips. You can choose from bean or beef only, as there are no chickens in sight. Two tacos with cheese will set you back less than $5. The lines are usually long, but they move fast. Cash only.

User Rating: 9.6 / 10

Description: WEST LOS ANGELES. Grilled pork tenderloin with mole amarillo, chicken with mole negro - Tlapazola brings a unique Oaxacan-style to LA. Although there are many imitations, the real thing is still the best. Their combination of dozens of herbs, different types of chocolates, and chilis keeps regulars coming back for the lamb, chicken, and pork dishes. The ambience is cool and casual, and it is always interesting to see what your neighbor has ordered. This is a marvelous place to try some dish you have never encountered before.
